Minister for Education on the Swedish decision to not close down schools

At a press briefing on June 11, Minister for Education Anna Ekström explained the Swedish decision to not close down the entire school system.

“The main reason was that it would not be an efficient and effective measure to stop the spread of the virus,” Minister for Education Anna Ekström said.

From March 17 and throughout the spring all teaching at Swedish upper secondary schools and in adult education, higher vocational education and higher education has been conducted remotely or online. On May 29 the Government announced that upper secondary schools can return to regular instruction on the school premises as of June 15.

“The decision to return to regular teaching was taken on the basis of a recently published document from the Public Health Agency of Sweden where it was concluded that children and young people only account for a small proportion of the COVID-19 cases,” Anna Ekström said.

“Moreover, staff within the preschool and school system which has remained open were found not to have been diagnosed with COVID-19 to a greater extent than those in other professions,” the Minister for Education stated.

  • develop academic mobility;
  • seek funding for European universities.
