A successful TUL debut in THE Impact ranking

The results of the latest edition of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings have been published. Lodz University of Technology made a very good debut.

The Impact ranking takes into account the activities of universities in terms of the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that form the basis of the 2030 Agenda. Lodz University of Technology competed in 5 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 3 – Good health and quality of life; Goal 8 – Economic growth and decent work; Goal 9 – Innovation, industry, infrastructure; Goal 10 – Less inequality, and Goal 17 – Partnership for the Goals.

The university received the highest rating for its activities in pursuit of Objective 8: Economic growth and decent work, taking first place in Poland ex aequo with the Wrocław University of Technology. In the world ranking, TUL was placed on a high level between 201 and 300. explains Justyna Kopańska from the International Cooperation Centre at TUL. – The ranking included 12 Polish universities, while in the previous edition there were only 5. In the general classification Gdansk University of Technology, Warsaw University and Warsaw Medical University were ranked between 601 and 800, Lodz University of Technology is one of eight Polish universities ranked between 801 and 1000, and Warsaw University of Technology was classified on position 1000+.

This is only the third edition of THE Impact ranking, but its popularity is growing rapidly. The methodology takes into account four broad areas: research, education, university management in terms of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and the university’s outreach.

In the 2021 edition of the ranking, there are 1,115 universities from 94 countries/regions in the overall ranking. First place in the overall ranking belongs to the University of Manchester, followed by two Australian universities: University of Sydney and RMIT University. Russian universities (75 universities) and Japanese universities (73 universities) were the most active in the ranking.

European Higher Education Organization is a public organization carrying out academic, educational and information activities on higher education in Europe.

The EHEO general plan stresses that:

  • Higher education systems require adequate funding and, as an investment in economic growth, public spending in higher education should be protected.
  • The challenges faced by higher education require more flexible governance and funding systems, which balance greater autonomy for education institutions with accountability to stakeholders.

Thus, EHEO plans:

  • improve academic and scientific interaction of universities;
  • protect the interests of universities;
  • interact more closely with public authorities of European countries;
  • popularize European higher education in the world;
  • develop academic mobility;
  • seek funding for European universities.
